Understanding Sexual Violence hui highlights diverse perspectives

The hui, titled Understanding Sexual Violence, welcomed 60 attendees from both community and statutory organisations across the region. Its purpose was to explore the varied impacts of sexual violence and the structural and social barriers that affect how different communities experience and respond to it.

Opening the event was Nadia Baksh, Senior Policy and Projects Coordinator at Imkaan, a UK-based organisation advocating for Black and minoritised women and girls affected by violence. Nadia brought an international perspective to the discussion, grounding her talk in race equity and intersectionality. She highlighted how systems often overlook or inadequately serve women from minoritised backgrounds, and the importance of culturally relevant services that prioritise lived experience.

Following Nadia, Grayson Javins, a former ACC-funded Mates and Dates programme facilitator, discussed the challenges faced by Rainbow communities. Drawing on his experience in secondary school education and community work, Grayson spoke about the barriers LGBTQIA+ individuals face when seeking support for sexual or intimate partner violence. He emphasised the need for inclusive, affirming services and stronger education around consent and healthy relationships.

The final speaker, Paul Moffat, Manager at Tautoko Tāne Male Survivors Aotearoa in Kerikeri, shared reflections from his work with a peer support group for male survivors in Whangārei. Paul’s talk focused on the value of connection and peer-led support in creating safe spaces for men to share their experiences and begin healing.

The event concluded with a shared lunch, providing space for informal conversations and networking. Participants praised the speakers for their honest and informed contributions and acknowledged the value of continued education and collaboration in tackling sexual violence.
