Rape Awareness Week 2026

Whangārei Rape Crisis is inviting the local community to the Hihiaua Cultural Centre on Thursday, 7 May, for a day dedicated to connection, education, and support.

The event, held as part of National Rape Awareness Week, aims to foster a safer Aotearoa by opening up conversations about consent and healthy relationships. Running from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm, the “Community Day” is designed to be a whānau-friendly and inclusive space for all ages.

Attendees can expect a diverse range of activities, including interactive games, arts and crafts, and a dedicated mirimiri station. Beyond the activities, the event serves a vital educational purpose. Organisers will be providing resources on “green flags” in healthy relationships and offering “myth-busting” sessions to challenge common misconceptions surrounding sexual violence. Educational focus will also be placed on trauma and the various pathways to healing.

Whangārei Rape Crisis has invited several partner organisations to be on-site, ensuring that those seeking information or support can connect directly with local service providers.

By hosting the event at the Hihiaua Cultural Centre, organisers hope to create a welcoming environment where the community can strengthen their collective understanding and care for one another. Members of the public are encouraged to drop in throughout the day to support this important kaupapa.
